The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met this day at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Gary Schellenberger, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Charlie Angus, Diane Bourgeois, Ed Fast, Tina Keeper, Maka Kotto, Francis Scarpaleggia, Gary Schellenberger, Hon. Andy Scott and Chris Warkentin.

 

Acting Members present: Raymond Bonin for Colleen Beaumier.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Matthew Carnaghan, Analyst; Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 

At 09:0 7 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee undertake a full investigation of the role for a public broadcaster in the 21st century, an examination of the various services including the adequacy of regional programming and an examination of the issues posed by new media.

 

It was agreed, — That the work plan of consultations of this investigation be adopted.

 

At 10:08 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:13 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in public.

 

The Chair made a statement with respect to the motion presented by Francis Scarpaleggia explaining that the Committee had made a decision with respect to his motion which reads as follow: “That the motion be tabled until such time if a report is considered by the Committee.”

 

Charlie Angus tabled the following motion: Due to the ongoing uncertainty of the future of the Canadian Television Fund (CTF) as precipitated by recent announcements from Shaw Communications Inc. and Vidéotron Ltée that they will no longer live up to the terms of their license by withholding contributions to the fund, this committee will investigate the impacts of the CTF’s potential elimination on the health of Canada's domestic television production and make recommendations to the House of Commons based on our findings.

 

At 10:23 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
