The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 9:09 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Colin Mayes, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Harold Albrecht, Steven Blaney, Rod Bruinooge, Jean Crowder, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Marc Lemay, Yvon Lévesque, Colin Mayes, Gary Merasty, Hon. Anita Neville and Brian Storseth.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Tonina Simeone, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Congress of Aboriginal Peoples: Patrick Brazeau, National Chief. National Association of Friendship Centres: Peter Dinsdale, Executive Director; Vera Pawis Tobobondung, President.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, October 18, 2006, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-292, An Act to implement the Kelowna Accord.
 

Patrick Brazeau and Vera Pawis Tobobondung made statements and, with the other witness, answered questions.

 

At 10:46 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:50 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

Anita Neville moved, — Whereas a majority of the members of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development voted in favour of a motion recommending that the government support the United Nations Draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People,

The Members of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development should travel to the United Nations in New York in December, 2006, to encourage Members of the General Assembly to vote in favour of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 6; NAYS: 4.

 

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
