    The Clerk of the Committee (Ms. Angela Crandall): Pursuant to an order adopted by the Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs on Monday, October 18, 2004, the floor is now open for nominations for the chair of the subcommittee on veterans affairs.

    Mrs. Ur.

    Mrs. Rose-Marie Ur (Lambton—Kent—Middlesex, Lib.): I nominate Anthony Rota.

    The Clerk: Are there any other nominations? All in favour?

    The Clerk: Mr. Rota is the chair of the subcommittee on veterans affairs.

    The Chair (Mr. Anthony Rota (Nipissing—Timiskaming, Lib.)): Thank you very much. I appreciate your support and your vote. Hopefully, I won't fall short and everything will fall well. We'll go from here, I guess.

    One of the first items we have to look at is the election of a vice-chair. Do we have any nominations from the floor?

    Mr. Gordon O'Connor (Carleton—Mississippi Mills, CPC): I'd like to nominate Betty Hinton.

    The Chair: Are there any other nominations?

    It is seconded by Gilles Perron. Merci, Gilles.

    The Chair: Congratulations, Betty.

    Mrs. Betty Hinton (Kamloops—Thompson—Cariboo, CPC): I look forward to working with you.

    The Chair: The next step is the routine motions or the rules for the main committee. Is everyone comfortable with that? Do we want to adopt the routine motions of the main committee or do we want to make any changes?

    Mr. Gordon O'Connor: I haven't seen this before; this is brand new.

    The Chair: Do we want to wait till the next meeting to adopt them then?

+-

    The Clerk: They're the same as the routine motions for the standing committee.

    Mr. Gordon O'Connor: They're the same as for the standing committee?

    The Chair: Yes.

    Mrs. Betty Hinton: Could we deal with the researcher and then leave everything till the following meeting so that we have a chance to read this through?

    The Chair: Okay. We'll leave that till the following meeting.

    Mrs. Betty Hinton: But let's establish the researcher so we don't lose ground here.

+-

    The Chair: Okay, very good.

    Do you want me to read it out, or is everybody okay with that: services of analysts from the parliamentary information and research services of the Library of Parliament? That's the first part. We're going to pass that part.

    It is so moved. It is seconded by Gilles.

    The Chair: We're past the research portion of it and we'll wait till the next meeting in order to pass the rest.

    Mrs. Betty Hinton: We need to establish a time for the meeting.

    The Chair: Good idea.

    Mrs. Betty Hinton: My personal preference would be that this is a lot easier than after the defence committee; 11 a.m. till 1 p.m. makes good sense to me. I don't know how anybody else feels about it. How about Mondays? Are Mondays all right?

    Mrs. Rose-Marie Ur: I'm here every day, but I do have a committee, so I can't do it Tuesdays or Thursdays at 11 a.m.

    The Chair: You can't do Tuesdays and Thursdays.

+-

    Mrs. Rose-Marie Ur: No. Monday is fine.

+-

    Mr. Gordon O'Connor: Monday and Wednesday we have defence.

+-

    Mrs. Betty Hinton: If that works for everybody else, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday is probably a pretty good time to do it. We'd have a chance to bring things forward at defence, if we wanted to, in the afternoon.

    The Chair: So 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Mondays. Does that work okay for everyone?

+-

    Mr. Nathan Cullen (Skeena—Bulkley Valley, NDP): I guess it depends on what Peter Stoffer.... I'll take a guess at his schedule. I think he's home with his sick wife.

    So far it seems to be okay.

    The Chair: He's agreeable. Will we do this only once a week, or do we need two meetings a week?

+-

    Mrs. Betty Hinton: Originally when we discussed this we talked about scheduling one, but if the need arises it could be two. I'm certainly not opposed to it being two.

    The Chair: It won't be Wednesday, because we have caucus on Wednesday, but we can determine that when the time comes.

    So everybody is okay with Mondays at 11 a.m.?

    Can I get a motion to pass that? Is that moved by Betty Hinton? Okay. And it is seconded by Larry Bagnell.

    The Chair: So Monday mornings from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Very good.

    Is there anything else we should be taking a look at?

    Mr. Gordon O'Connor: I don't know if it's appropriate or not, but I would, at least in a future meeting, bring forward the case of a gentleman who's been in the Sun and everything else, Mr. Wenzel. In fact, I think he's even asked to come tell his story to the board, because it's not just him; it's the sort of thing people have problems with--pensions.

    I don't know what the procedure is for that, but you can pass it around to people. It's not for today, but you can read it. It's Worthington's article on his situation.

    The Clerk: The next meeting would be the appropriate time to discuss what we might want to raise as subject matter.

    Mr. Gordon O'Connor: Of course.

    The Chair: Will we be getting a translation?

    How long do you think it will take?

    The Clerk: We don't usually translate newspaper reports. It's fairly short, so I can see about getting it translated.

    We can have it before the next meeting.

    The Chair: Before the next meeting, will that do?

    Mr. Gilles-A. Perron: Thank you.

    The Chair: All right then.

    Very good.

    Are there any other items that we want to deal with right now before we go in camera?

    What I'd like to do is take it in camera, and then we'll determine where the committee is going to go or where we want to take it, and we'll just get some feedback or input from everyone. We can take the next steps from there, and at the next meeting we'll have some direction we can go in.

    We'll suspend for a couple of minutes and go in camera.
