The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 362 East Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Hon. Larry Bagnell, Hon. Bill Blaikie, Rick Casson, Odina Desrochers, Dave MacKenzie, Hon. Keith Martin, Pat O'Brien, Gordon O'Connor and Anthony Rota.

 

Acting Members present: Cheryl Gallant for Gordon O'Connor and Wajid Khan for Hon. Judi Longfield.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Michel Rossignol, Analyst. As an Individual: Joseph P. Culligan, Consultant.

 

Witnesses: Department of National Defence: VAdm Bruce MacLean, Chief of Maritime Staff; Capt(N) Patrick Finn, Senior Member, Naval Board of Inquiry.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing session on the Naval Board of Inquiry.
 

VAdm MacLean made a statement and, with the other witness, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

By unanimous consent, Rick Casson moved, — That a full, uncensored copy of the report of the Naval Board of Inquiry into the fire on the Chicoutimi be provided to the Committee, in confidence, by the Department of National Defence and if the report is not provided to the Committee by Tuesday May 17, 2005, the Minister of National Defence and other appropriate persons from the Department be called to appear before the Committee to fully explain why information is being withheld from the Committee on this issue.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

 

At 10:43 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
