The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met in a televised session at 9:02 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D Centre Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Larry Bagnell, Hon. Bill Blaikie, Rick Casson, Betty Hinton, Hon. Judi Longfield, Dave MacKenzie, Hon. Keith Martin, Pat O'Brien and Gordon O'Connor.

 

Acting Members present: Cheryl Gallant for Dave MacKenzie and Réal Lapierre for Gilles-A. Perron.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner, Analyst; Michel Rossignol, Analyst. As Individual: Joseph P. Culligan, Consultant.

 

Witnesses: As an Individual: Prof. Martin Shadwick.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on October 18, 2004, the Committee resumed its study of the acquisition of submarines by the Canadian Forces.
 

The witness made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 10:30 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:33 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That further to a motion agreed to at a previous meeting the Committee will not invite Kenneth Calder, National Defence Assistant Deputy Minister (Policy) to appear before them.

 

Betty Hinton moved, — That the Chair write to the minister on behalf of the committee, expressing our thanks that he is going to personally review the case of Mr. Wenzel, and expressing the fact that we have had an update from Mr. Martin, as per the request of Mr. O'Connor and the committee, and that while we're pleased the minister is going to undertake this review, we want to ask him to ensure that he consider certain factors, such as the fact that Mr. Wenzel had a distinguished career later on in another branch.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 2.

 

At 10:52 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
