The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met in camera at 11:11 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Bernard Patry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Maurizio Bevilacqua, Stockwell Day, Helena Guergis, Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Alexa McDonough, Hon. Dan McTeague, Pierre A. Paquette, Bernard Patry, Beth Phinney and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Jim Abbott for Ted Menzies, Roger Clavet for Francine Lalonde and Randy Kamp for Helena Guergis.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the work plan, as amended, be adopted.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee devote three hearings to its review of issues related to the subject matter of Bill C-357, Taiwan Affairs Act.

 

At 12:07 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

Alexa McDonough moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the Committee’s on-going study of Haiti, the Committee invite the Foreign Affairs Minister, the Prime Minister’s Special Adviser for Haiti, and the Canadian Ambassador to Haiti, to update members on: (a) Haiti’s state of election readiness; (b) Canada’s on-going involvement in training the Haitian Military Police; (c) the evaluation of Canada’s involvement in Haiti since the removal of President Bertrand Aristide; and (d) the assessment of the impact of Canada’s involvement in removing President Aristide, on Canada’s relationship with Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Debate arose thereon.

 

Pierre A. Paquette moved, — That the motion be amended in (c) by substitution for the word “removal” the word “departure” and in (d) by substitution for the word “removing” the words “the departure of”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Pierre A. Paquette and it was agreed to.

At 12:16 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
