The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 8:03 a.m. this day, in the Salon A, The Fairmont Newfoundland, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Chair, Andrew Telegdi, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Colleen Beaumier, Meili Faille, Helena Guergis, Rahim Jaffer, Bill Siksay, Hon. Andrew Telegdi and Lui Temelkovski.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Benjamin Dolin, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Multicultural Women's Organization of Newfoundland and Labrador: Lloydetta Quaicoe, President. Association for New Canadians: Eileen Kelly Freake, Career Services Manager, AXIS Employment and Training Centre. Multicultural Women's Organization of Newfoundland and Labrador: Kaberi Sarma-Debnath, Member-at-large. Canadian Council for Refugees: Nick Summers, President. Refugee Immigrants Advisory Council: Donna Jeffrey, Executive Director. Association for New Canadians: Janet Mackey, Settlement Social Worker, Manager of Refugee Claimant Services. Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of St. John's: Liai Tong Kom, Co-Sponsor, Basilica Parish of St. John the Baptist; Laurel Doucette, Parishioner of the Basilica Parish, Basilica Parish of St. John the Baptist. As Individuals: HuaLin Wong, President, HuaLin Wong Immigration Consultant Limited; Remzi Cej, Student. Newfoundland and Labrador Families Adopting Multiculturally: Lynn Haire. Council of Canadians with Disabilities: Mary Ennis, Vice Chairperson; Leslie McLeod, Member, Human Rights Committee.

 

At 8:07 a.m. Andrew Telegdi took the Chair.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, October 27, 2004, the Committee resumed its study of Recognition of the International Experience and Credentials of Immigrants.
 

Panel I. Foreign Credentials

 

Lloydetta Quaicoe, Eileen Kelly Freake, Kaberi Sarma-Debnath, Nick Summers and Donna Jefrey made statements and answered questions.

 

At 9:27 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:35 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, October 27, 2004, the Committee resumed its study of Family Reunification Issues.
 

Panel II. Family Reunification

 

Janet Mackey, Nick Summers, Laurel Doucette, Liai Tong Kom, Donna Jeffrey and Lloydetta Quaicoe made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:58 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:04 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, October 27, 2004, the Committee resumed its study on Citizenship Issues.
 

Panel III. Citizenship

 

HuaLin Wong, Remzi Cej, Lynn Haire, Nick Summers and Mary Ennis made statements and, with Leslie McLeod, answered questions.
