The Standing Committee on Official Languages met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D Centre Block, the Chair, Hon. Don Boudria, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Hon. Don Boudria, Yvon Godin, Christian Jobin, James Lunney, Marcel Proulx, Scott Reid, Benoît Sauvageau, Raymond Simard and Yolande Thibeault.

 

Acting Members present: Dominic LeBlanc for Benoît Serré.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marion Ménard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages: Dyane Adam, Commissioner of Official Languages; Gérard Finn, Advisor to the Commissioner; Louise Guertin, Director General, Corporate Services Branch; Michel Robichaud, Director General, Investigations Branch; Johane Tremblay, Director, Legal Services Branch. CPAC: Joel Fortune, Legal Consel, Johnston & Buchan, L.L.P.; Barry Kiefl, President, Canadian Media Research Inc.; Natalie LeMay-Calcutt, Director, Business Affairs; Colette Watson, President and General Manager.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study on the Broadcasting and Availability of the Debates and Proceedings of Parliament in Both Official Languages by CPAC.
 

Colette Watson made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 4:32 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:35 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Orders 81(4) and 81(5), the Committee commenced consideration of the Supplementary Estimates (B) 2003-2004: Vote 25b under PRIVY COUNCIL referred to the Committee on February 19, 2004 and Main Estimates 2004-2005: Vote 30 under PRIVY COUNCIL referred to the Committee on February 24, 2004.
 

By unanimous consent, the Chair calls Votes 25b and 30 under PRIVY COUNCIL.

 

Dyane Adam made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

Vote 25b under PRIVY COUNCIL carried.

 

Vote 30 under PRIVY COUNCIL carried.

 

ORDERED, — That the Chair report Votes 25b and 30 under PRIVY COUNCIL to the House.

 
It was agreed — That, if the Minister responsible for Official Languages is not available to appear on March 10, 2004, the clerk invite representatives of the television broadcasters to attend the committee's meeting in relation to its examination of broadcasting and the availability of the debates and proceedings of Parliament in both official languages.
 

At 5:24 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
