The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 705 La Promenade Building, the Chair, Tom Wappel, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Andy Burton, John Cummins, Loyola Hearn, Bill Matthews, Carmen Provenzano, Jean-Yves Roy, Gary Schellenberger, Paul Steckle, Peter Stoffer, Tom Wappel and Bob Wood.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: François Côté, Analyst; Alan Nixon, Principal.

 

Witnesses: United Fishermen & Allied Workers' Union : Irvin Figg, President; Garth Mirau, Vice-President. Canadian Responsible Fisheries Federation: Capt Richard Misner, Chairman; Henry Copestake, Managing Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing session with the United Fishermen and Allied Workers' Union.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

The Chair presented the Second Report from the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure which read as follows:

 

Your Subcommittee met on Thursday, April 22, 2004 and agreed to make the following recommendations:

 
That representatives from the United Fishermen and Allied Workers' Union be invited to appear before the Committee on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, from 11:00 a.m. to 12: 00 p.m.

That representatives from the Canadian Responsible Fisheries Federation be invited to appear before the Committee on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

That officials from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans be invited to appear before the Committee on Thursday, April 29, 2004, for a follow-up discussion on the Fraser River study.

That, if feasible, the Clerk make arrangements for a video conference with representatives from the Sable Fish Association to appear on Thursday, April 29, 2004.

That officials from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans be invited to appear before the Committee on Tuesday, May 4, 2004, for a follow-up discussion on the study concerning Aquatic Invasive Species.

That officials from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans be invited to appear before the Committee on Thursday, May 6, 2004, for a follow-up discussion on the Atlantic Fisheries Report and the Government Response and the document released by the Minister on March 25.

That officials from the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada be invited to appear before the Committee on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, for a follow-up discussion on the TAGS program and the situation of retirement and banking of hours in the fishing industry.

That the Subcommittee meet on Wednesday, May 5, 2004, to consider the future business of the Committee.

 

It was agreed — That the report of the Subcommittee be concurred in

 

At 12:03 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:07 p.m., the sitting resumed.
