The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met in camera at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 362 East Block, the Chair, Paul Steckle, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Gilbert Barrette, Wayne Easter, Ken Epp, Mark Eyking, David Kilgour, Larry McCormick, Louis Plamondon, Dick Proctor, Gerry Ritz, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Dan Shaw, Analyst; Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal.

 

It was agreed, — That Lakeside Packers Ltd., Alberta, Cargill Foods of High River, Alberta and XL Beef of Calgary, Alberta and Saskatchewan, Better Beef Limited, Ontario and Levinoff Meats Limited, Quebec, be ordered to provide to the Clerk of the Committee, prior to April 21, 2004, for an in camera review by the Standing Committee, the following documents:(a) a copy of the financial statements detailing the added marginal costs attributable to the new BSE safety regulations along with their profit margins on a monthly basis for calendar year 2003; and (b) documents explaining why the prices they paid for fed steers and heifers declined by approximately 50% in the three weeks following the announcement of the federal-provincial BSE Recovery Program on 18 June 2003.

 
It was agreed, - That the Chair send a letter to the Chair of the Standing Committee of Procedure and House Affairs on the issue of prior review of appointments.
 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study of a draft report on the pricing of beef at the slaughter, wholesale and retail levels, in the context of the BSE crisis in Canada.
 

At 5:53 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
