Thursday, January 30, 2003

The Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in a televised session at 3:20 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Judi Longfield, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Peter Adams, Eugène Bellemare, John Finlay, Peter Goldring, Monique Guay, Ovid Jackson, Judi Longfield, Gurbax Malhi, Raymond Simard, Diane St-Jacques and Suzanne Tremblay.

Acting Member present: Yvon Godin for Libby Davies.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr and Bill Young, Research Officers.

Appearing: From the House of Commons: The Hon. Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development.

Witness: From the Department of Human Resources Development: Lenore Burton, Director General, Learning and Literacy.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on Literacy.

The Minister made a statement and with the other witness answered questions.

Pursuant to the motion adopted by the Committee on November 5th, 2002, Yvon Godin gave the required two days written notice of the following motion:

That a special Sub-Committee of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development be struck to recommend reforms to the Employment Insurance eligibility requirements in certain industries.

At 4:38 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
