The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Bonnie Brown, Jeannot Castonguay, Brenda Chamberlain, Hon. Hedy Fry, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield, Svend Robinson, Carol Skelton and Greg Thompson.
In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, Research Officers.
Witnesses: From the Assembly of First Nations: Wendall Nicholas, Policy Analyst, Health Secretariat; Kimberly Whetung, Associate Director, Health Secretariat; Mary Jane McCallum, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Manitoba. From the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami of Canada: Larry Gordon, Chairperson, Health Committee. From the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association: Susan A. Ziebarth, Executive Director; Judy Lux, Health Policy Communications Specialist. From the Canadian Dental Association: Louis Dubé, President-Elect; Darryl R. Smith, Executive Council Member. From the Department of Health: Peter Cooney, Director General, Non Insured Health Benefits Directorate, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch; Leslie MacLean, Acting Director General, Non Insured Health Benefits, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee held a session on First Nations and Inuit Dental Health.
Wendall Nicholas, Mary-Jane McCallum, Larry Gordon, Susan Ziebarth, Louis Dubé, Peter Cooney and Leslie MacLean made statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.
On motion of Carolyn Bennett, it was agreed, -- That, pursuant to Standing Order 97.1, the Committee request an extension of thirty (30) sitting days to consider Bill C-260, An Act to amend the Hazardous Products Act (fire-safe cigarettes), referred to the Committee on November 28, 2002 and that the Chair report to the House.
At 6:03 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
