MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 19

Monday, February 10, 2003

The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:37 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Stan Dromisky, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Jeannot Castonguay, Stan Dromisky, James Lunney, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield, Svend Robinson, Hélène Scherrer, Carol Skelton and Yolande Thibeault.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Union of Public Employees: Judy Darcy, President; Claude Généreux, National Secretary Treasurer. From the Canadian Labour Congress: Barb Byers, Executive Vice President; Cindy Wiggins, Senior Researcher, Social and Economic Policy Department. From the Canadian Health Coalition: Kathleen Connors, Chairperson; Michael McBane, National Co-ordinator. From the Council of Canadians: Maude Barlow, Chairperson; Anil Naidoo, Campaigner. From the Assembly of First Nations: Elaine Johnston, Director, Health Secretariat.

Carol Skelton moved, -- That this Committee immediately invite Canadian Blood Services to appear to discuss West Nile Virus’ impact on the safety and supply of Canada’s national blood system for the summer of 2003.

Yolande Thibeault moved, -- That consideration of the motion be postponed.  The question was put on the motion and it was, by a show of hands, adopted.

Carol Skelton moved, -- That this Committee immediately convene hearings into the special health needs of northern and remote communities, especially those needs related to their unique funding requirements.

Yolande Thibeault moved, -- That consideration of the motion be postponed.  The question was put on the motion and it was, by a show of hands, adopted.

 

YEAS: 5                                                                                  NAYS: 3

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee held a session on the People’s Summit on Health Care.

Elaine Johnston, Maude Barlow, Kathleen Connors, Michael McBane, Judy Darcy and Barb Byers made statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:25 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
