Meeting No. 41

Tuesday, June 10, 2003

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met in a televised session at 9:12 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Bernard Patry, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Murray Calder, Aileen Carroll, Irwin Cotler, John Duncan, Hon. Art Eggleton, Mark Eyking, André Harvey, Francine Lalonde, Hon. Diane Marleau, Alexa McDonough, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Karen Redman.

Acting Members present: Claude Bachand for Stéphane Bergeron, Leon Benoit for Stockwell Day, Cheryl Gallant for John Duncan

Associate Members present:  Karen Kraft Sloan

Other Members present:  John Godfrey and David Pratt.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: James Lee and Marcus Pistor, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From Project Ploughshares: Ernie Regehr, Executive Director. From the University of Manitoba: James Fergusson, Deputy Director, Centre for Defence and Security Studies.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced consideration of missile defence issues. (See Minutes of Proceedings of May 27, 2003, Meeting No. 36).

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 9:33 a.m. the Committee proceeded to discuss its future business.

It was agreed, - That, following the tabling of the Committee report HIV/AIDS and the Humanitarian Catastrophe in Sub-Saharan Africa on June 12, 2003, a press conference be organized at 11:00 a.m.

The questioning of witnesses resumed.

At 10:58 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
