Meeting No. 23

Thursday, May 15, 2003

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met in a televised session at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Hon. Charles L. Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Roy Bailey, Bernard Bigras, Hon. Charles L. Caccia, Joe Comartin, John Herron, Gary Lunn, Bob Mills, Andy Savoy, Paul Szabo, Alan Tonks.

Associate Member present: Cheryl Gallant.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas and Tim Williams, Analysts.

Appearing: From the House of Commons: Hon. John McCallum, Minister of National Defence.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Karen Ellis, Assistant Deputy Minister, Infrastructure and Environment; Ginger Stones, Director General, Environment.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), 2003 OAG Report - Chapter 7 - National Defence - Environmental Stewardship of Military Training and Test Areas.

The Minister made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

Paul Szabo moved, - That the Chair of the Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development be authorized to travel to Bonn, Brussels, Paris, Berlin and Geneva  from June 14 to 28, 2003 in relation to a Forum for Chemical Weapons Destruction and that a budget in the amount of $4,407.00 be adopted for that purpose.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to, on division.

At 12:12 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
