Meeting No. 2

Wednesday, April 25, 2001

The Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met in a televised session at 5:53 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Carolyn Bennett, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Robert Lanctôt, Wendy Lill, Karen Redman.

Acting Members present: Paul Crête for Robert Lanctôt.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Bill Young and Julie MacKenzie researchers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Association for Community Living: Diane Richler, Executive Vice-President. From the Canadian Association of Independent Living Centres: Traci Walters, National Director. From the Canadian Council on Rehabilitation and Work: Joan Westland, Executive Director; Neil Young, Vice President. From the Canadian National Institute for the Blind: Fran Cutler, National Chair. From the Council of Canadians with Disabilities: Laurie Beachell, National Co-ordinator; Paul A. Young, National Chairperson. From the Easter Seals/March of Dimes National Council: Bill Mates, National Council Member; Graham Martin, Chair, National Council. From the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada: Pauline Mantha, Executive Director. From the National Educational Association of Disabled Students: Frank Smith, National Coordinator. From the Canadian Paraplegic Association: François Bélisle, Chief Executive Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(c) Study of the matters relating to the proposing, promoting, monitoring and assessing of initiatives aimed at the integration and equality of disabled persons in all sectors of Canadian Society.

Laurie Beachell, François Bélisle, Fran Cutler, Pauline Mantha, Bill Mates, Diane Richler, Frank Smith, Traci Walters, Joan Westland, Neil Young and Paul A. Young made statements and, with the other participants proceeded to a round table discussion.

At 8:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
