Meeting No. 60

Tuesday, June 11, 2002

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Mac Harb, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: John Bryden, John Finlay, Mac Harb, Sophia Leung, Philip Mayfield, Shawn Murphy, Gilles-A. Perron, Joe Peschisolido, Alex Shepherd and Greg Thompson.

Acting Member present: Val Meredith for Rahim Jaffer.

Associate Member present: Val Meredith.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Brian O'Neal and Jean Dupuis, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Office of the Auditor General: Sheila Fraser, Auditor General of Canada; Douglas Timmins, Assistant Auditor General; John Wiersema, Assistant Auditor General. From Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat: Richard Neville, Deputy Comptroller General; Roberta Santi, Associate Deputy Comptroller General, Comptrollership Branch; Ivan Blake, Executive Director, Comptrollership Modernization Directorate, Comptrollership Branch. From the Department of Finance: Peter DeVries, Director, Fiscal Policy Division, Economic and Fiscal Policy Division.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(e), the Committee proceeded to consider Chapter 1 (Financial Information Strategy: Infrastructure Readiness) of the December 2001 Report of the Auditor General of Canada; and Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(e), Consideration of Chapter 7 (Strategies to Implement Modern Comptrollership) of the April 2002 Report of the Auditor General of Canada.

Sheila Fraser and Richard Neville made statements.

On motion of Philip Mayfield, it was agreed, - That in relation to the letter dated May 14, 2002 from Richard J. Neville, Deputy Comptroller General, concerning waivers to the publication of details related to ex gratia payments relating to Special Benefits to Merchant Navy Veterans and of heating fuel rebates, that an annual waiver be given to Treasury Board provided that the gross amounts and the total number of claims are reported to Parliament.

The witnesses answered questions.

At 5:15 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
