Meeting No. 22

Tuesday, June 12, 2001

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, John Williams, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: John Bryden, Odina Desrochers, John Finlay, Mac Harb, Marlene Jennings, Sophia Leung, Shawn Murphy, Joe Peschisolido, Alex Shepherd and John Williams.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Brian O'Neal and Jean Dupuis, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency: Guy Proulx, Director General, Revenue Collections Directorate, Assessment and Collections Branch; Harvey Beaulac, Assistant Commissioner, Appeals Branch. From the Department of Human Resources Development: John McWhinnie, Assistant Deputy Minister, Insurance; Gordon McFee, Director, Policy and Legislation Development; André Hurtubise, Acting Director General, Investigation and Control. From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada: Sheila Fraser, Auditor General of Canada; Jean Ste-Marie, Assistant Auditor General; Neil Papineau, Director, Audit Operations.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(e), the Committee proceeded to consider Chapter 34 (Audit Observation: Canada Customs and Revenue Agency and Human Resources Development Canada) of the December 2000 Report of the Auditor General of Canada.

Sheila Fraser from the Office of the Auditor General of Canada made a statement.

Guy Proulx from the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency made a statement.

John McWhinnie from the Department of Human Resources Development made a statement.

Sheila Fraser, Guy Proulx, John McWhinnie, Harvey Beaulac, Neil Papineau and André Hurtubise answered questions.

At 5:29 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
