MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 54

Thursday, January 31, 2002

The Standing Committee on Health met in camera at 11:56 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Bonnie Brown, Colleen Beaumier, Jeannot Castonguay, James Lunney, Réal Ménard, Hélène Scherrer, Judy Sgro, Yolande Thibeault and Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Members present: Howard Hilstrom for Diane Ablonczy, Carolyn Parrish for Stan Dromisky Julian Reed for Reg Alcock and Bryon Wilfert for Brenda Chamberlain

Associate Members present: Howard Hilstrom.

Other Member present: Suzanne Tremblay.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

The Committee discussed its future business.

 

It was agreed, -- That the Committee proceed immediately with its study of labelling of food products containing genetically-modified organisms.

 

It was agreed, -- That the Standing Committee on Health invite the Minister of Health to appear before it no later than March 15, 2002, to discuss the general direction that she intends her Department to take.

 

It was agreed, --That the Standing Committee on Health invite the Auditor General to appear before it no later than March 15, 2002, to discuss chapters 5, 9 and 11 of her December 2001 report.

 

It was agreed, -- That the Committee invite Commissioner Roy Romanow to present to the Committee the interim report of the Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada and to discuss the Commission’s plans.

 

It was agreed, -- That the Committee proceed with the study of labeling of food products containing GMO’s as a full committee, and that no subcommittee be struck.

 

At 12:47 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
