Tuesday, May 1st, 2001

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 1:04 p.m. this day, in Winnipeg at The Lombard Hotel,2 Lombard Place in Winnipeg Ballroom, the Chair, John McCallum presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral, John Herron, Inky Mark, John McCallum, Anita Neville, Yolande Thibeault, Judy Wasylycia-Leis, Lynne Yelich.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jay Sinha, Researcher.

At 13:04 the Committee heard witnesses from Edmonton via videoconference:

Witnesses: From the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta: Al Schuld, Deputy Registrar. From the Canada Family Action Coalition: Roy Beyer, President. From the Canadian Bar Association, Northern Alberta Branch: Wendy Danson, Past Chair. From the Alberta Centre for International Education: Valdemar Larsen, Executive Director. From the Alberta Association of Immigrant-Serving Agencies: Alice Colak, Chairperson.

From the Saskatoon Refugee Coalition: Helen Smith-McIntyre. From the Anglican Diocese of Saskatoon: Dr. Liisa Cormode. From the University of Regina: Amit Chakma, Vice-President, Research and International Liaison Officer. From the Action Committee on Anti-Racism in Education and Employment Sectors: Christine Lwanga. From the Saskatchewan Anti-Racism Network: Fiona Bishop, Member; Keith Philander, Member. From the Saskatchewan Action Committee on the Status of Women: Kripa Sekhar, Executive Coordinator. From the Immigrant, Refugee and Visible Minority Women of Saskatchewan: Bula Ghosh, President. From the Regina Refugee Coalition: Gordon Barnes. From the Saskatchewan Coalition Against Racism: Erica Cancino, Vice-President.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Tuesday, February 27, 2001, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-11, An Act respecting immigration to Canada and the granting of refugee protection to persons who are displaced, persecuted or in danger (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, March 1st, 2001, Meeting No. 2).

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 4:40 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
