Meeting No. 53

Thursday, February 28, 2002

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, Rick Borotsik, Murray Calder, Claude Duplain, Mark Eyking, Charles Hubbard, Dick Proctor and Rose-Marie Ur.

Acting Member present: Odina Desrochers for Suzanne Tremblay.

Other Member present: Dale Johnston.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian National Millers Association: Gordon Harrison, President. From the Baking Association of Canada: Paul Hetherington, President. From the Consumers' Association of Canada: Jennifer Hillard, Vice-President, Issues and Policy; Gail Lacombe, Past President. From the Grain Growers of Canada: Brian Trueblood, Executive Member of the Board; Terry Daynard, Chair of the Biotech Committee. From the Ontario Corn Producers' Association: Ken Hough, Director of Research and Market Development. From the BIOTECanada: Janet Lambert, President; Chris Warfield, Director, Government and Regulatory Affairs, Aventis CropScience; Carole Nap, Vice-President, Policy and Public Affairs.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on the Labelling of Genetically Modified Food. (Impacts of voluntary and mandatory labelling on agricultural producers and the rest of the agri-food industry).

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
