Meeting No. 40

Thursday, January 31, 2002

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met in a televised session at 9:03 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: David Anderson, Rick Borotsik, Murray Calder, Mark Eyking, Howard Hilstrom, Charles Hubbard, Larry McCormick, Dick Proctor, Bob Speller, Paul Steckle, Suzanne Tremblay and Rose-Marie Ur.

Acting Member present: Carol Skelton for Gary Breitkreuz.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Research Officers.

Witnesses: Roundtable:  From the Canadian Wheat Board: Gord Flaten, Director, Market Development; Alexandra Lamont, Advisor, Strategic Planning and Policy. From the Canadian Grain Commission: Brian Marchylo, Acting Director, Grain Research Laboratory. From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Peter Brackenridge, Vice-President, Programs; Bart Bilmer, Director, Office of Biotechnology. From the Canadian Federation of Agriculture: Marvin Shauf, 2nd Vice-President; Dietwald Claus, Policy Analyst. From the Food and Consumer Products Manufacturers of Canada: Laurie Curry, Vice-President, Public Policy and Scientific Affairs; Martin Jamieson, Vice-President, North America Integration and Planning, General Mills Inc.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on the Labelling of Genetically Modified Food. (Impacts of voluntary and mandatory labelling on agricultural producers and the rest of the agri-food industry).

Gord Flaten, Brian Marchylo, Peter Brackenridge, Marvin Shauf and Laurie Curry made opening statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
