MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 33

Tuesday, November 20, 2001

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: David Anderson, Rick Borotsik, Murray Calder, Claude Duplain, Mark Eyking, Marcel Gagnon, Howard Hilstrom, Charles Hubbard, Rick Laliberte, Dick Proctor, Bob Speller, Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From Canada Customs and Revenue Agency: Denis Lefebvre, Assistant Commissioner, Customs Branch; Brian Jones, Director, Import Process Division, Operational Policy and Coordination Directorate, Customs Branch; Craig Turner, Director, Admissibility Programs, Trade Policy and Interpretation Directorate, Customs Branch.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), Briefing Session on Measures taken to ensure that the movement of Agriculture and Agri-Food Products crossing the border has not been disrupted following the 11th September events.

Mr. Denis Lefebvre made a presentation and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:00 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:01 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera to consider its future business.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee accept the requests of the following groups to appear before it:

-         Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan on November 22, 2001.

-         AGCare (Agricultural Groups Concerned about Resources and the Environment) on November 27.

It was agreed, -- That, Minister Ralph Goodale be invited to appear before the Committee to consider the marketing of wheat and barley;  that the clerk and the researchers prepare two (2) different work plans to study the labelling of genetically modified organisms (GMO) and, the pesticides approval and the competitiveness of Canadian Farmers.

At 5:34 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
