Thursday, February 28, 2002

The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs, Northern Development and Natural Resources met in a televised session at 11:00 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Raymond Bonin, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Larry Bagnell, Gérard Binet, Raymond Bonin, John Finlay, John Godfrey, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Richard Marceau, Benoît Serré, Guy St-Julien.

Acting Member(s) present: Deborah Grey for Gerald Keddy and Larry Spencer for Maurice Vellacott.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages; Mary Hurley and Carol Hilling, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Assembly of First Nations: Matthew Coon Come, National Chief; Ghislain Picard, Vice-Chief; Richard Powless, Special Advisor.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of an overview of the evolution of the Indian Act.

Matthew Coon Come, Ghislain Picard each made an opening statement, and answered questions.

At 12:44 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:49 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera, to consider the future business of the Committee.

At 1:11 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
