MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 1

Tuesday, March 21, 2000

The Sub-Committee on the Study of Sport in Canada met at 9:35 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Marlene Jennings, Steve Mahoney, Inky Mark, Dennis Mills, Beth Phinney and George Proud.

Acting Members present: Richard Marceau for Caroline St-Hilaire, Nelson Riis for John Solomon, and Mark Muise for Peter MacKay.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Antony Jackson, Research Officer.

The Clerk presided over the election of the Chair.

On motion of George Proud, seconded by Steve Mahoney, Dennis Mills was elected as Chair of the Sub-Committee.

On motion of George Proud, Steve Mahoney was elected as Vice-Chair of the Sub-Committee.

On motion of Beth Phinney, Inky Mark was elected as Vice-Chair of the Sub-Committee.

It was agreed, - That the Sub-Committee retain the services of one or more Research Officers from the Library of Parliament, as needed, to assist the Committee in its work, at the discretion of the Chair.

It was agreed, - That the Chair be authorized to hold meetings to receive evidence when a quorum is not present provided that at least three (3) members are present, including one (1) member of the Opposition.

It was agreed, - That the allocation of time for the questioning of witnesses be left to the discretion of the Chair.

It was agreed, - That the Sub-Committee adopt a 24 hour notice period for motions, unless otherwise ordered by the Sub-Committee.

On motion of Richard Marceau, it was agreed, - That the Clerk of the Sub-Committee be authorized to distribute all documents received only once they have been translated in both official languages.

At 10:05 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
