Meeting No. 30

Thursday, March 2, 2000

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights met at 11:15 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Andy Scott, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Aileen Carroll, Paul DeVillers, Ivan Grose, John Maloney, John McKay and Andy Scott.

Acting Members present: Eric Lowther for Jim Abbott, Réal Ménard for Michel Bellehumeur, Svend Robinson for Peter Mancini.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Senior Analyst, Mary C. Hurley, Researcher.

Witnesses: From Queen's University: Prof. Martha Bailey, Faculty of Law. From the Canada Family Action Coalition: Peter Stock, National Affairs Director. From EGALE (Equality for Gays and Lesbians Everywhere): Kim Vance, President; John Fisher.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Monday, February 21, 2000, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-23, An Act to modernize the Statutes of Canada in relation to benefits and obligations (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, February 29, 2000 , Meeting No. 27).

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 12:56 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
