The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met in a televised session at 11:07 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Mauril Bélanger, Paul Bonwick, Sarmite Bulte, Irwin Cotler, Pierre de Savoye, Clifford Lincoln, Inky Mark, Dennis Mills, Mark Muise.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Researcher.

Witnesses: From the "Association pour l'avancement des sciences et des techniques de la documentation": Louis Cabral, Chief Executive Officer. From the Canadian Library Association: Vicki Whitmell, Executive Director; Leacy O'Callaghan - O'Brien, Associate Executive Director. From the "Union des écrivaines et écrivains québécois": Carole David, Writer/Professor. From the Writers' Union of Canada: Christopher Moore, Chairperson; Penny Dickens, Director. From the Periodical Writers Association of Canada: Victoria Ridout, Executive Director.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), consideration of the Canadian Book Publishing Industry.

Louis Cabral, Vicki Whitmell, Carole David, Christopher Moore, Victoria Rideout made opening statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 12:50 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
