Meeting No. 20

Thursday, May 4, 2000

The Standing Committee on Health met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 705, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Lynn Myers, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Yvon Charbonneau, Christiane Gagnon, Ovid Jackson, Réal Ménard, Bob Mills, Lynn Myers, Marcel Proulx, Paul Szabo, Greg Thompson, Maurice Vellacott.

Acting Members present: Judy Sgro for Bill Matthews, Steve Mahoney for Ted McWhinney, Dennis Mills for Marcel Proulx, Sophia Leung for Karen Redman, Hec Cloutier for Rose-Marie Ur, Chuck Strahl for Reed Elley, Peter Mancini for Judy Wasylycia-Leis and at 10:20 a.m., Michel Bellhumeur for Christiane Gagnon.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), and its order of Tuesday, April 14, 2000, Meeting No. 17, consideration of the Report of the Auditor General of Canada November 1999, Chapter 29, "Federal Support of Health Care Delivery".

Bob Mills moved, ¾ That, the Standing Committee on Health take all necessary measures to give due attention to the topic of mental health in Canada by creating a permanent sub-committee devoted to the issue of mental health.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was negatived on the following recorded division:

Bob Mills moved, ¾ That the Standing Committee on Health immediately commence a study on related problems surrounding the state of health care in Canada.

At 10:10 a.m., by unanimous consent, it was agreed that the witnesses be allowed to leave.

Debate resumed on the motion of Bob Mills.

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
