MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 51

Tuesday, May 30, 2000

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:11 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Gérard Asselin, Yvan Bernier (by conference call), John Cummins, John Duncan, Wayne Easter, Bill Gilmour, Gerald Keddy, Bill Matthews, Marcel Proulx, Carmen Provenzano, Lou Sekora, Paul Steckle.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

The Committee proceeded to discuss future business.

It was agreed, - That the Chair set up a briefing on species at risk and cruelty to animals and what the implications may be on fisheries.

Marcel Proulx moved, - That the Committee issue a press release throughout the Maritimes and the Province of Quebec explaining that the Canadian Alliance refuses the Committee authorization to travel in these areas.

After debate thereon, the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 2.

YEAS = Sarkis Assadourian, Bill Matthews, Marcel Proulx, Lou Sekora, Paul Steckle.

NAYS = Gerald Keddy, Carmen Provenzano.

At 10:15 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
