Wednesday, November 24, 1999

The Standing Committee on Finance met at 8:44 a.m. this day, in Jaquie Shumiatcher Room, Saskatchewan Centre for the Arts, Regina, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Maurizio Bevilacqua, Roy Cullen, Ken Epp, Sophia Leung, The Hon. Lorne Nystrom and Karen Redman.

Acting Member present: Jim Jones for Scott Brison.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean Soucy, Researcher; Marion Wrobel, Senior Analyst.

Witnesses: Roundtable I - As Individual: Elwin Hermanson, Leader of the Saskatchewan Party, Leader of the Official Opposition; John Keen. From the International Association of Fire Fighters: Gerry Huget, President, Saskatchewan Professional Fire Fighters Association; Kevin Tetlow, Treasurer, Regina Professional Firefighters Association. From the University of Saskatchewan: Dr. Michael Atkinson, Vice President (Academic). From the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool: Lyle Knutson, Director; Daniel Schmeiser, Manager, Economic Analysis & Policy Development, Policy & Economic Research. From the Regina Chamber of Commerce: Jim Deane, President; Bev Robertson, Volunteer Member, Small Business Committee.

Roundtable II - From the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations: Don Ross, Executive Portfolio Director, Office of Vice Chief Cyr. From the Ag-West Biotech Inc.: Peter McCann, President. From the Canadian Association of the Non-Employed: Joan Johannson, Chairperson. From the Adult Children of Divorce, Canada: Joni Andrychuk, President. From the Wynyard & District Chamber of Commerce: Darwin Brown, President. From the SouthEast Concerned Agricultural Producers: Tom Cameron, Spokesperson; Murray Firth, Spokesperson.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 83.1, the Committee resumed its Pre-Budget Consultations. (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, November 2, 1999, Meeting No. 2).

Elwin Hermanson made a statement and answered questions.

At 9:24 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:26 a.m., the sitting resumed.

John Keen, Gerry Huget, Michael Atkinson, Lyle Knutson, Jim Deane, Bev Robertson and Don Ross made statements and, with the other participants from roundtable I, answered questions.

At 10:32 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:36 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Peter McCann, Joan Johannson, Joni Andrychuck, Darwin Brown and Tom Cameron made statements and, with the other participants in roundtable II, answered questions.

At 11:19 a.m., Karen Redman took the Chair.

At 12:09 a.m., the Chair took the Chair.

At 12:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
