Meeting No. 26

Wednesday, May 10, 2000

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Joe Fontana, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Leon Benoit, Joe Fontana, Sophia Leung, Rick Limoges, John McKay and David Price.

Acting Members present: Jim Abbott for Rob Anders and Réal Ménard for Bernard Bigras.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.

Appearing: The Honourable Elinor Caplan, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.

Witnesses: From the Department of Citizenship and Immigration: Janice Cochrane, Deputy Minister; Michel Dorais, Associate Deputy Minister; Joan Atkinson, Acting Deputy Minister, Policy and Program Development; Georges Tsaï, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services; Martha Nixon, Assistant Deputy Minister, Operations.

The Committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference relating to the Main Estimates 2000-2001. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Wednesday, May 3, 2000).

The Chair called Votes 1, 5 and 10, under Citizenship and Immigration, and pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), proceeded to consider Part III of the Report on Plans and Priorities of the Department.

The Minister made a statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
