Meeting No. 8

Monday, May 10, 1999

The Sub-Committee on Tax Equity for Canadian Families with Dependent Children of the Standing Committee on Finance met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Gallery II of the Empire Landmark Hotel & Conference Centre in Vancouver, the Chair, Nick Discepola, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Serge Cardin, Nick Discepola, Michelle Dockrill, Paul Forseth, John Herron and Paul Szabo.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Julie Cusson, Analyst.

Witnesses: From the B.C. Federation of Labour: John Weir, Director. From the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives: Marjorie Griffin Cohen, Research Associate; Margot E. Young, Research Associate. From the Campaign Life Coalition of B.C.: John Hof, President. From the Coalition on Child Care Advocacy: Rita Chudnovski, Member; Lynell Anderson, Member. From the Social Planning and Research Council of British Columbia: Nancy Henderson, Executive Director; Jane Pulkingham, Past Chair, Income Security and Labour Market Committee; Michael Goldberg, Research Director. From the First Call: Cindy Carson, Provincial Coordinator. From the Westcoast Women for Life: Kathleen Higgins, President; Cecilia Ziebart, Director; Sheila Formby, Director.

Pursuant to the motion adopted by the Standing Committee on Finance, dated March 17, 1999, the Sub-Committee resumed its study on Tax Fairness for Canadian Families with Dependent Children.

John Weir from the B.C. Federation of Labour made a statement and answered questions.

Marjorie Griffin Cohen and Margot Young from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and John Hof from the Campaign Life Coalition of B.C. made statements and answered questions.

Rita Chudnovski from the Coalition on Child Care Advocacy and Nancy Henderson, Jane Pulkingham and Michael Goldberg from the Social Planning and Research Council of British Columbia made opening statements and, with the other witness from the Coalition on Child Care Advocacy, answered questions.

Cindy Carson from First Call and Kathleen Higgins from Westcoast Women for Life made opening statements and, with the other witnesses from Westcoast Women for Life, answered questions.

At 12:54 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
