MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 40

Tuesday, October 20, 1998

The Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations met in camera at 11:05 a.m. this day, in Room 362-E, East Block, the Chair, Brent St. Denis, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Réginald Bélair, Gilles Bernier, David Chatters, Pierre de Savoye, Yvon Godin, Tony Ianno, Carolyn Parrish, Beth Phinney, Carmen Provenzano, Werner Schmidt, Ben Serré, and Brent St. Denis.

Acting Members present: Raymonde Folco for Gerry Byrne, Sheila Finestone for Roy Cullen.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages and Jack Stilborn, Research Officers.

The Committee discussed its future business.

It was agreed, - That the Committee invite officials from Canada Post as well as representatives of Canadian Postal Franchisees to appear before the Committee concerning the dispute between Canada Post and its franchisees.

It was agreed, - That the Committee invite the Minister of Public Works and Government Services to appear before the Committee concerning renovations to the Parliamentary Precinct.

It was agreed, - That the Committee invite the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-food to appear before the Committee concerning the Government's Response to the "Think Rural" report.

It was agreed, - That the Committee reiterate its May 26th invitation to the President of the Treasury Board.

It was agreed, - That this Committee write a letter to Mr. Staes, Belgian Representative on the Council of Europe, to express our interest as a Committee in meeting with their delegation in Canada, based on the assumption that they are planning a Canadian visit;

It was agreed, - That the Committee seek authorization for the Natural Resources Committee to send a delegation to Europe when the Council of Europe Resolution on "Deforestation of temperate rainforests and Canada’s responsibility" is scheduled for discussion;

It was agreed, - That the Committee hold hearings on the Whitehorse Mining Initiative and further processing opportunities in the mining sector.

At 12:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
