Meeting No. 67

Thursday, March 11, 1999

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: John Cummins, Claude Drouin, Wayne Easter, Charles Hubbard, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Carmen Provenzano, Yves Rocheleau, Paul Steckle, Peter Stoffer.

Acting Member(s) present: Denis Coderre for Lawrence O'Brien; Larry McCormick for Lou Sekora.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

The Committee proceeded to discuss future business.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, - That the Eleventh Report of the Committee be adopted.

On motion of Larry McCormick, it was agreed, - That the Chair be authorized to table the report to the House.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, - That the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans proceed to establish a joint sub-committee with the Standing Committee of Environment and Sustainable Development to examine issues related to the environmental management of the aquaculture industry. The study to be undertaken by the joint sub-committee could include an examination of the regulation and use of pesticides, veterinary drugs, the generation and release of wastes, and the effect of nutrients on the ocean environment as a result of aquaculture.

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, -That the Standing Committee of Fisheries and Oceans proceed to establish a joint sub-committee with the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage to examine the implications of Bill C-48, An Act respecting Marine Conservation Areas on fishery related activities.

At 9:36 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
