Thursday, April 29, 1999
The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:38 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Rey Pagtakhan, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Sophia Leung, Steve Mahoney, Grant McNally, Rey Pagtakhan and Andrew Telegdi.
Acting Members present: David Pratt for Mark Assad; Julian Reed for Jean Augustine; John Bryden for Paul DeVillers; John Finlay for Raymonde Folco; Serge Cardin for Réal Ménard and Rob Anders for Jack Ramsay.
Associate Member present: Serge Cardin.
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.
Witnesses: From the Citizenship and Immigration Canada: Greg Fyffe, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy and Program Development; Norman Sabourin, Director of Citizenship and Citizenship Registrar; Joan Atkinson, Director General, Selection Branch; Eric Stevens, Legal Counsel, Office of the Assistant Deputy Attorney General; Debra Pressé, Acting Manager, Legislative Compliance, Integration; Madeleine Riou, Nationality Law Advisor, Integration.
Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated March 1, 1999, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-63, An Act respecting Canadian citizenship. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Wednesday, March 3, 1999, Meeting No. 50)
The Committee resumed consideration of Clause 2.
Greg Fyffe, Norman Sabourin, Eric Stevens and Joan Atkinson answered questions.
Debra Pressé made an audio visual presentation and answered questions.
Steve Mahoney moved, - That the Committee schedule meetings on Bill C-63 as follows:
Tuesday, May 4, 1999 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday, May 5, 1999 from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Thursday, May 6, 1999 from 9:00 a.m. until such time as the Bill is adopted and
- That the Chair report the Bill as adopted no later than Friday, May 7, 1999.
And the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to on division.
Questioning continued.
At 6:02 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
