MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 37

Thursday, October 8, 1998

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 11:41 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, for the purpose of electing a Chair pursuant to Standing Order 106(1).

Members of the Committee present: Mark Assad, Leon Benoit, Paul DeVillers, Norman Doyle, Raymonde Folco, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Steve Mahoney, Pat Martin, John McKay, Grant McNally, Réal Ménard, Rey Pagtakhan, Andrew Telegdi.

Acting Members present: Sarkis Assadourian for Jean Augustine; Claude Drouin for Sophie Leung and Deepak Obhrai for Jack Ramsay.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Researcher.

Pursuant to Standing Order 106(1) the Clerk presided over the election of a Chair.

On motion of John McKay, seconded by Raymonde Folco, it was agreed, - That Rey Pagtakhan do take the Chair of this Committee.

Accordingly, Rey Pagtakhan took the Chair.

On motion of Steve Mahoney, it was agreed, - That Raymonde Folco be elected Vice-Chair of the Committee.

On motion of Grant McNally, it was agreed, - That Leon Benoit be elected Vice-Chair of the Committee.

Réal Ménard proposed to move the following motions:

- That the Standing Committee on Immigration hear from Canadian NGOs involved in Chile, to ensure that Chilean refugees in Montreal, who must return to Chile, will not undergo any violation of their human rights.

- That an information meeting be held for members of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration regarding countries where there are conflicts which may well cause an increase in the numbers of political refugees.

It was agreed, - That the Committee consider the proposed motions of Réal Ménard at its next sitting.

At 11:50 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
