WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 1998
The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:54 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Stan Dromisky, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Stan Dromisky, Raymonde Folco, Sophia Leung, Steve Mahoney, Maria Minna and John Reynolds.
In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.
Witnesses: (Roundtable format) As individuals: François Crépeau, Professor of Law; France Houle, Immigration Lawyer. From the Toronto Refugee Lawyers Association: Michael Crane, Lawyer. From the Metro Toronto Chinese and Southeast Asian Legal Clinic: Avvy Yao-Yao Go, Immigration Lawyer. From the Canadian Bar Association: Gordon Maynard, Member of the Executive, National Citizenship and Immigration Section.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of Recommendation 155 of the Report of the Legislative Review Advisory Group entitled "Not just Numbers: A Canadian Framework for Future Immigration", particularly issues relating to removal and detention. (See Minutes of Proceeding of Wednesday, February 18, 1998, Meeting No. 10.)
The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.
At 5:37 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
