The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-food met at 9:04 a.m., this day, in Room

308, West Block, Joe McGuire, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Paul Bonwick, Murray Calder, John Harvard, Jake E. Hoeppner, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch: Sonya Dakers, Research Coordinator and Frédéric Forge, Researcher.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Margaret Kenny, Acting Director, Office of Biotechnology. From Health Canada: Paul Mayers, Head, Office of Food Biotechnology. From the University of Calgary: Edna Einseldel, Graduate Program in Communications. From Food and Technology (Oshawa): Dr. Milly Ryan-Harshman, Consultant. From the Food Biotechnology Communications Network (Guelph): Dr. Gord Surgeoner, Chair. From Consumer's Association of Canada: Christine Mitchler, Chair, Food Committee. From the National Federation of Consumers of Quebec: Nathalie St-Pierre, General Director. From the Canadian Environmental Defence Funds (Toronto): Burkhard Mausberg, Executive Director.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of Biotechnology, (Regulatory Framework; Public Perception and Access to Information), as part of its input into the Renewal of the Canadian Biotechnology Strategy.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 10:33 a.m., the sitting was suspended.
