The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-food met at 8:47 a.m., this day, in Room

269, West Block, Joe McGuire, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Murray Calder, John Harvard, Jake E. Hoeppner, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire and Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch: Sonya Dakers, Research Coordinator, Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist and Frédéric Forge, Researcher.

Witnesses: From the Acadia University: Dr. Kelvin Ogilvie, President. From Industry Canada: Roy Atkinson, Executive Director, Canadian Biotechnology, Strategy Task Force. From Agrevo Canada Inc.: Margaret Gadsby, Director, Regulatory Affairs, Biotechnology North-America, and Chair, BIOTECanada.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced a study on Biotechnology as part of its input into the Canadian Biotechnology Strategy (present and future trends in crop and animal biotechnology applications).

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 11:04 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
