Meeting No. 44

Tuesday, November 24, 1998

The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 9:17 a.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Guy St-Julien, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: John Bryden, John Finlay, Ghislain Fournier, David Iftody, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Judi Longfield, Mike Scott, Guy St-Julien, Myron Thompson and Bryon Wilfert.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Terry Henderson, Director General, Claims Implementation Branch; Jeff Moore, Director, James Bay Implementation Office; Ian Corbin, Acting Director, Community Development Directorate; Martin Lévesque, Counsel. From the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation: Deborah Taylor, Acting Director; Teresa Maioni, Solicitor. From the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada: Okalik Eegeesiak, President; Violet Ford, Executive Assistant to the President.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), a special meeting on the housing problems of Nunavik. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Thursday, November 19, 1998, Meeting No. 43.)

Myron Thompson gave notice of the following motion, - That the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development be requested to appear before the Committee at the earliest opportunity to address the Performance Report of the Department.

Terry Henderson, from the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, made a statement and, with Deborah Taylor from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Ian Corbin answered questions.

Myron Thompson moved, -That the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development be requested to appear before the Committee at the earliest opportunity to address the Performance Report of the Department.

And debate arising thereon;

John Bryden moved, -That the motion be amended by striking out the words "Performance Report of the Department" and replacing them with the following: "Aboriginal social housing crisis across Canada".

After debate, the amendment was agreed to.

After further debate;

The question being put on the motion, as amended, it was agreed to by a show of hands.
