Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the committee on Thursday, October 19, 2023, the committee resumed its study of the lack of housing availability on or near bases for Canadian Armed Forces members and their families and the challenges facing members and their families when they are required to move across the country.

Robert Olmstead made a statement and answered questions.

Motion

James Bezan moved, — That the committee resume consideration of the motion he moved on Monday, January 29, 2024, which read as follows:

That, given the testimony from witnesses at the Nova Scotia Legislature’s Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs, which repudiated denials from the Department of National Defence regarding military homelessness, and that given that there is widespread and incontrovertible evidence that after eight years of Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister our military members can’t afford food or housing, the committee invites: the Minister of Housing; the  Executive Director of the Royal Canadian Legion Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command; the Director of Emergency Management for the Halifax Regional Municipality; and the Executive Director of the Halifax & Region Military Family Resource Centre to answer questions on the military housing crisis.

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived on the following recorded division:

YEAS: James Bezan, Stephen Ellis, Cheryl Gallant, Pat Kelly, Christine Normandin — 5;

NAYS: Chad Collins, Andy Fillmore, Darren Fisher, Marie-France Lalonde, Emmanuella Lambropoulos, Lindsay Mathyssen — 6.

At 6:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
