The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 11:44 a.m. this day, in Room 306, The Valour Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, Lois Brown, Paul Dewar, Marc Garneau, Peter Goldring, Hon. Laurie Hawn, Romeo Saganash, Gary Ralph Schellenberger and Bernard Trottier.

 

Acting Members present: Denis Blanchette for Hélène Laverdière.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; Brian Hermon, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development: Rachael Bedlington, Director, Human Rights and Indigenous Affairs Policy Division; Diane Jacovella, Assistant Deputy Minister, Global Issues and Development; Leslie Norton, Director General, International Humanitarian Assistance; Julie Shouldice, Director, Education, Child Protection and Gender Equality; Guillermo Rishchynski, Permanent Representative of Canada to the United Nations.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Wednesday, April 9, 2014, the Committee resumed its study of the Protection of Children and Youth in Developing Countries.
 

Diane Jacovella made a statement and, with Leslie Norton, Rachael Bedlington, Julie Shouldice and Guillermo Rishchynski, by videoconference from New York, New York, answered questions.

 

At 12:53 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:53 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee schedule two (2) meetings in connection with its study of the situation in Hong Kong; that the Committee invite witnesses to appear and testify before the Committee on this subject; and that the Committee report back its findings to the House of Commons.

 

It was agreed, — That during its meeting on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, the Committee consider:

  • a draft report on the situation in Honduras, as adopted by the Subcommittee on International Human Rights on February 19, 2015
  • matters related to Committee business
  • a draft report in relation to the study of Canada’s response to the violence, religious persecution and dislocation caused by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
 

It was agreed, — That during its meeting on Thursday, March 26, 2015, the Committee consider a draft report in relation to the study of Canada’s response to the violence, religious persecution and dislocation caused by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

 

It was agreed, — That, further to the motion adopted by the Committee on Tuesday, February 24, 2015, the Committee invite the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of International Development and the Minister of State (Foreign Affairs and Consular) to appear before it on Thursday April 2, 2015 from 12:15 to 1:30 p.m. on the Main Estimates 2015-16 and the related reports on plans and priorities.

 

At 1:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
