The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met at 8:48 a.m. this day, in Room 306 The Valour Building, the Chair, Dean Allison, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dean Allison, David Anderson, Lois Brown, Paul Dewar, Marc Garneau, Peter Goldring, Hon. Laurie Hawn, Hélène Laverdière and Gary Ralph Schellenberger.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Mauril Bélanger for Marc Garneau and Anne-Marie Day for Romeo Saganash.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Allison Goody, Analyst; Brian Hermon, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Voice of the Martyrs Canada: Douglas McKenzie, Chief Executive Officer; Peter Jardine, Chairman of the Board. Jubilee Campaign: Emmanuel Ogebe, Special Counsel; Saa Chibok.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded a briefing on Freedom of Religion in Nigeria.
 

Douglas McKenzie, Peter Jardine, Emmanuel Ogebe, by teleconference, and Saa Chibok, by videoconference, made statements and answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Marc Garneau, it was agreed, — That, in connection with the study of Canada's Response to the Violence, Religious Persecution and Dislocation Caused by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the Committee invite Vian Dakhil, Yazidi member of the Iraqi Parliament, to appear before it on Tuesday, December 2 or Thursday, December 4, 2014.

 

On motion of Paul Dewar, it was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $2,650, for the briefing on Freedom of Religion in Nigeria, be adopted.

 

On motion of Paul Dewar, it was agreed, — That a proposed budget in the amount of $22,500, for the study of Canada's Response to the Violence, Religious Persecution and Dislocation Caused by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), be adopted.

 

At 10:20 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
