The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:01 a.m. this day, in Room 306, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Joy Smith, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Kelly Block, Patrick Brown, Colin Carrie, Libby Davies, Hon. Hedy Fry, Matthew Kellway, Wladyslaw Lizon, Ben Lobb, Dany Morin, Djaouida Sellah, Joy Smith and Mark Strahl.

 

Acting Members present: Kellie Leitch for Patrick Brown.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Raphaelle Deraspe, Analyst; Karin Phillips, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: University of Manitoba: Eric Bohm, Associate Professor, Concordia Joint Replacement Group. As an individual: Christopher Fotti, Doctor, Pritchard Farm Health Centre. British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS: Thomas Kerr, Director, Urban Health Research Initiative; Julio Montaner, Director. Canadian College of Health Leaders: Ray Racette, President and Chief Executive Officer. St. Boniface Hospital: Michel Tétreault, President and Chief Executive Officer.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Thursday, February 9, 2012, the Committee resumed its study of technological innovation.
 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That the Committee allow Eric Bohm to deliver a PowerPoint presentation that is available in only one official language.

 

Eric Bohm, Ray Racette, Christopher Fotti, Michel Tétreault, and Julio Montaner and Thomas Kerr by videoconference from Vancouver, British Columbia, made statements and answered questions.

 

Djaouida Sellah gave notice of the following motion:

That, the Committee agrees to undertake a study of at least five meetings of the social determinants of health in order to review and assess the evidence that social conditions determine health; confirm which social and/or economic conditions have impacts on the health of Canadians and, to the extent possible, quantify that impact; identify the impacts, including financial, of these determinants on Canada's healthcare system; make recommendations with respect to how to address these determinants in order to: improve the health of Canadians; and render Canada's healthcare more affordable and sustainable and that the Committee report its finding to the House of Commons.

 

At 12:59 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
