The Standing Committee on Finance met in a televised session at 9:00 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, James Rajotte, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Mark Adler, Hon. Scott Brison, Alain Giguère, Shelly Glover, Hoang Mai, Wayne Marston, Cathy McLeod, Peggy Nash, James Rajotte and Dave Van Kesteren.

 

Acting Members present: Dean Del Mastro for Randy Hoback and Wai Young for Brian Jean.

 

Associate Members present: Cheryl Gallant.

 

Other Members present: Jack Harris.

 

In attendance: House of Commons: Mariane Beaudin, Procedural Clerk. Library of Parliament: Mark Mahabir, Analyst; Brett Stuckey, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance.

 

Witnesses: Department of Finance: Benoît Robidoux, Assistant Deputy Minister, Economic and Fiscal Policy Branch; Doug Nevison, Director, Fiscal Policy Division, Economic and Fiscal Policy Branch. Bank of Canada: Mark Carney, Governor; Tiff Macklem, Senior Deputy Governor.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on August 15, 2011, the Committee commenced its study of the current debt crisis and economic turmoil in the United States and Europe, and its potential impact on Canada.
 

The Hon. Jim Flaherty made a statement and, with Benoît Robidoux, answered questions.

 

At 9:59 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:02 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Mark Carney made a statement and, with Tiff Macklem, answered questions.

 

At 11:03 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
