The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Steven Blaney, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Hon. Denis Coderre, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Yvon Godin, Denis Lebel, Pierre Lemieux, Richard Nadeau, Daniel Petit, Pablo Rodriguez and Brent St. Denis.

 

Acting Members present: Roger Gaudet for Raymond Gravel.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Élise Hurtubise-Loranger, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Public Service Commission of Canada: Maria Barrados, President; Donald Lemaire, Vice-President, Staffing and Assessment Services Branch; Henry Edwards, Director, Research and Development, Personnel Psychology Centre, Staffing and Assessment Services Branch.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on March 13, 2008, the Committee commenced its study of the language skills of exempt management staff.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 10:10 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:14 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

On motion of Denis Coderre, it was agreed, — That the Clerk of the Privy Council be invited to appear before the committee as part of its study on the linguistic skills of exempt management staff.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Yvon Godin, it was agreed, — That the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Status of Women and Official Languages, the Honourable Josée Verner, the Minister for the Pacific Gateway and the Vancouver-Whistler Olympics, the Hon. David Emerson, and the Commissioner of Official Languages, Mr. Graham Fraser, be invited to appear before the Standing Committee on Official Languages as part of the Committee’s study of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Vancouver, to ensure that the Games will be taking place properly in both of Canada’s official languages, in order to respect the rights of Canadians.

 

On motion of Yvon Godin, it was agreed, — That the Chair of the Standing Committee on Official Languages write a letter to the Canadian Radiotelevision and Telecommunications Commission to enquire into transmission interference between the Salt Spring Island Radio Corporation and the Société radio communautaire Victoria.

 

At 10:49 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
