The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:36 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Norman Doyle, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Dave Batters, Colleen Beaumier, Robert Carrier, Olivia Chow, Norman Doyle, Nina Grewal, Hon. Jim Karygiannis, Wajid Khan, Ed Komarnicki, Thierry St-Cyr and Hon. Andrew Telegdi.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Penny Becklumb, Analyst; Sandra Elgersma, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Royal Canadian Legion: Pierre Allard, Service Bureau Director, Dominion Command; Erl Kish, Dominion Vice-President. Department of Citizenship and Immigration: Mark Davidson, Director, Legislation and Program Policy, Citizenship Branch; Ann Heathcote, Senior Policy Advisor, Citizenship Branch; Lori Beckerman, Acting Team Leader, Senior Counsel, Integration and Admissibility Team, Legal Services.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Thursday, February 7, 2008, the Committee commenced consideration of Bill C-37, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act.
 

Erl Kish and Pierre Allard made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:28 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:30 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Mark Davidson made a statement and, with Lori Beckerman and Ann Heathcote, answered questions.

 

Ed Komarnicki moved, — That, on Wednesday, February 13, at 3:30 p.m., the witnesses from Citizenship and Immigration appear before this Committee and that we immediately proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-37 until consideration is completed.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 2.

 

At 5:26 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:26 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the operating budgets for the study of Bill C-17 and the pre-study of Bill C-37 in the amounts of $5,700 and $5,150 respectively be adopted.

 

At 5:33 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
