The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, Mauril Bélanger, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Jim Abbott, Hon. Mauril Bélanger, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Ed Fast, Hon. Hedy Fry, Luc Malo, Maria Mourani, Francis Scarpaleggia, Hon. Andy Scott and Bill Siksay.

 

Acting Members present: Patricia Davidson for Gary Schellenberger.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marion Ménard, Analyst; Lara Trehearne, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Women Against Violence Against Women: Irene Tsepnopoulos-Elhaimer, Executive Director; Dalya Israel, Victim Service Medical Support Worker. Media Awareness Network: Cathy Wing, Co-Executive Director. Canadian Broadcast Standards Council: Ronald I. Cohen, National Chair; John MacNab, Executive Director.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Tuesday, October 16, 2007, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-327, An Act to amend the Broadcasting Act (reduction of violence in television broadcasts).
 

Irene Tsepnopoulos-Elhaimer and Cathy Wing made statements and, with Dalya Israel, answered questions.

 

At 4:23 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:25 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Ronald I. Cohen made a statement and, with John MacNab, answered questions.

 

At 5:13 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:15 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Maria Mourani, it was agreed, — That the CRTC appear before the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage to give an update on the Internet content regulations and explain the advantages and disadvantages of the current situation.

 

At 5:19 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
