The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met in camera at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Gord Brown, Hon. Raymond Chan, Hon. Roy Cullen, Dave MacKenzie, Serge Ménard and Rick Norlock.

 

Acting Members present: Jean-Yves Laforest for Maria Mourani, Derek Lee for Hon. Irwin Cotler, Tom Wappel for Hon. Sue Barnes and Jeff Watson for Laurie Hawn.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst; Philip Rosen, Principal.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed a study on Counterfeit Goods.
 

The Committee gave drafting instructions to the analysts for a report.

 

At 12:10 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:11 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

On motion of Tom Wappel, it was agreed, — That the operational budget in the amount of $28,650 for the study of the Review of the Witness Protection Program, be adopted.

 

Serge Ménard moved, — That the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, first of all, immediately take up the issue of the fate of the Afghan prisoners captured by the Canadian military and turned over to the Afghan authorities and that, to that end, it invite the Minister of Public Safety to appear before the Committee as soon as possible and that it also invite the Correctional Service Canada employees who have been to Afghanistan, or are currently there, so that they can report their on-site observations to the Committee and bring with them all the documents or reports they have written about their time there.

Debate arose thereon.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 4; NAYS: 6.

 

At 12:56 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
