The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 705, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Judy Sgro, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Diane Bourgeois, Hon. Irwin Cotler, Patricia Davidson, Nina Grewal, Helena Guergis, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Maria Minna, Maria Mourani, Hon. Anita Neville, Hon. Judy Sgro, Joy Smith and Bruce Stanton.

Acting Members present: Hon. Carolyn Bennett for Hon. Irwin Cotler and Rod Bruinooge for Helena Guergis.

In attendance: House of Commons: Louise M. Thibault, Committee Clerk . Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst ; Lyne Casavant, Analyst ; Marlisa Tiedemann, Analyst.

Witnesses: Native Women's Association of Canada: Beverley Jacobs, President. Assembly of First Nations: Bob Watts, Chief of Staff, Office of the National Chief; Debra Hanuse, Acting Director - Law and Legislation. Native Women's Association of Canada: Lisa Abbott.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a study on matrimonial real property rights of Aboriginal women.

Beverly Jacobs, Bob Watts, and Debra Hanuse made statements and answered questions.

At 10:31 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:34 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
